Goltz, Christel

Goltz, Christel, German soprano; b. Dortmund, July 8, 1912. She studied in Munich with Ornelli-Leeb. In 1935 she joined the chorus of the Fiirth Opera, where she soon made her operatic debut as Agathe; from 1936 to 1950 she was a member of the Dresden State Opera; also sang with the Berlin State Opera and the Berlin City Opera. In 1951 she sang Salome at her debut at London’s Covent Garden. From 1951 to 1970 she made many appearances with the Vienna State Opera; in 1952 she was named a Kammersangerin. On Dec. 15, 1954, she made her Metropolitan Opera debut in N.Y. as Salome, remaining on its roster for the season. She sang in many productions of modern operas.
