Giraldoni, Eugenic

Giraldoni, Eugenic, notable Italian baritone, son of Leone Giraldoni and Carolina Ferni-Geraldoni; b. Marseilles, May 20, 1871; d. Helsinki, June 23, 1924. He received training from his mother. In 1891 he made his operatic debut as Escamillo in Barcelona, and then sang in various Italian music centers, including Milan’s La Scala and Rome’s Teatro Costanzi; at the latter he created the role of Scarpia on Jan. 14, 1900. On Nov. 28, 1904, he made his Metropolitan Opera debut in N.Y. as Barnaba, singing there for a season; he then pursued his career in Europe and South America. Among his other roles of distinction were Amonasro, Valentin, Boris Godunov, Rigoletto, and Gerard.
