Gingliené, Pierre Louis

Gingliené, Pierre Louis, French historian of literature and writer on music; b. Rennes, April 25, 1748;d. Paris, Nov. 16, 1816. He studied at Rennes Coll., then went to Paris, where he was an original member of the Institut de France. He served in government posts, then wrote extensively on the history of French and Italian literature. He was an ardent advocate of Piccinni in the Gluck-Piccinni controversy; his attacks on Gluck are contained in his Lettres et articles sur la musique, inseres dans les journaux sous le nom de Melophile, pendant nos dernieres querelles musicales, en 1780, 1781, 1782 et 1783 (Paris, 1783). He also wrote Notice sur la vie et les ouvrages de Piccinni (Paris, 1800), and contributed historical articles to the Dictionnaire de musique of the Encyclopedic methodique.
