Ellis, Mary [ Mary Elsas] (b NY, 1900). Amer.-born Eng. soprano. Début NY Met 1918. Created Novice in Suor Angelica and sang Lauretta in Gianni Schicchi. Also sang with Caruso and Chaliapin. Had Broadway success in title-role of Friml's Rose Marie, 1924. Settled in Eng., singing in Kern's Music in the Air (1933) and Novello's Glamorous Night (1935), The Dancing Years (1939), and Arc de Triomphe, based on life of Mary Garden (1943). Also acted in plays by Coward, Rattigan, and O'Neill. Appeared in TV play at age of 92.
