Elizalde, Federico

Elizalde, Federico, Spanish conductor and composer; b. Manila, Philippines (of Spanish parents), Dec. 12, 1908; d. there, Jan. 16, 1979. He studied piano at the Madrid Cons. (First prize, 1923), law at Stanford Univ., and composition with Ernest Bloch. In 1930 he became conductor of the Manila Sym. Orch. and in 1948 presi-dent of the Manila Radio. His works include Paul Gauguin, opera (1948), Sinfonia Concertante (Barcelona, April 23, 1936), Violin Concerto (1943), Piano Concerto (1947), and chamber music.
