Eberwein, (Franz) Carl (Adalbert)

Eberwein, (Franz) Carl (Adalbert), German violinist and composer, brother of Traugott (Maximilian) Eberwein; b. Weimar, Nov. 10,1786; d. there, March 2, 1868. He received training in music from his father in Weimar, where he wa, s a flutist and then a violinist (from 1803) in the ducal orch. In 1807 he was made music director of Goethe’s household. After further studies with Zelter in Berlin (1808–09), he returned to Weimar and served as a chamber musician in the ducal orch. and at the Stadtkirche (1810–18). He then was director of music at the Cathedral (1818–26), and subsequently ducal music director and director of the Court Theater (1826–29). He composed stage works and songs to texts by his friend Goethe. Among his works were the Singspiels Die Heerschau, Der Gras zu Gleichen, and Der Teppichhandler, cantatas, and chamber music. His auto-biographical sketch is included in W. Bode, Goethes Schauspieler und Musiker (Berlin, 1912).
