Dupuis, Albert

Dupuis, Albert, eminent Belgian composer; b. Verviers, March 1, 1877; d. Brussels, Sept. 19, 1967. He studied piano, violin, and flute at the Verviers Cons, before pursuing training with d’Indy and others at the Paris Schola Cantorum (1897–99). Returning to his homeland, he won the Belgian Prix de Rome in 1903 with his cantata La chanson d’Halewyn f which was premiered in Brussels on Nov. 25 of that year; it later was rev. as the opera of the same title and premiered in Antwerp on Feb. 14,1914. In 1907 he became director of the Verviers Cons., which post he held until 1947. He distinguished himself as a composer for the theater, in a style reflecting his French training.
