Brouwer, Margaret

Brouwer, Margaret American composer and teacher; b. Ann Arbor, Feb. 8, 1940. She was educated at the Oberlin (Ohio) Cons, of Music (B.M., 1962), Mich. State Univ. (M.M., 1963), and Ind. Univ. (D.M., 1988). She taught at Ind. Univ. (1985–88) and Washington and Lee Univ. (1988–96). From 1993 to 1997 she was composer-in-residence of the Roanoke Sym. Orch. In 1996 she was appointed to the Vincent K. and Edith H. Smith Chair in Composition and was made head of the composition dept. at the Cleveland Inst. of Music. She held residencies at the Va. Center for the Arts (1990), the Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Center in Italy (1994), and at the MacDowell Colony (1999). In 1999 she was awarded the Cleveland Arts Prize.
