Berglund, Joel (Ingemar)

Berglund, Joel (Ingemar), Swedish bass-baritone; b. Torsâker, June 4, 1903; d. Stockholm, Jan. 21, 1985. He was a pupil of John Forsell at the Stockholm Cons. (1922–28). In 1928 he made his operatic debut as Lothario in Mignon at the Royal Opera in Stockholm, where he was a member until 1949; he then made guest appearances there until 1964. He also sang in Venice, Chicago, Bayreuth (as the Dutchman, 1949), and other operatic centers. On Jan. 9, 1946, he made his Metropolitan Opera debut in N.Y. as Hans Sachs, remaining on its roster until 1949. He served as director of the Royal Opera in Stockholm (1949–52), and continued to make appearances in opera until his retirement in 1970.
