Benoît, Camille, French writer on music and com-poer; b. Roanne, Loire, Dec. 7, 1851; d. Paris, July 1, 1923. He studied with Franck (1872). From 1883 he wrote articles on music, and in 1888 he joined the staff of the Louvre in Paris, becoming keeper of antiquities in 1895. Collections of his articles on music appeared in Souvenirs (1884) and Musiciens, poètes et philosophes (1887). Among his compositions were an unfinished opera, Cléopâtre (1889), two symphonic poems, Merlin l’enchanteur and La nuit (unfinished), and Eleison for Solo Voices, Chorus, and Orch. (1890).
