Atzmon (real name, Groszberger), Moshe

Atzmon (real name, Groszberger), Moshe, Hungarian-born Israeli conductor; b. Budapest, July 30, 1931. He was taken to Palestine in 1944, where he attended the Tel Aviv Academy of Music (1958–62), and then pursued conducting studies at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. In 1964 he won 1st prize in the Liverpool conducting competition, and then appeared as a guest conductor with various British orchs. He was chief conductor of the Sydney (Australia) Sym. Orch. (1969–71), the North German Radio Sym. Orch. in Hamburg (1972–76), the Basel Sym. Orch. (1972–77), and the Tokyo Metropolitan Sym. Orch. (1978–82). With Giuseppe Patanè, he served as co-principal conductor of the American Sym. Orch. in N.Y. (1982–84), and then was chief conductor of the Nagoya Phil, in Japan (1986–92). From 1991 to 1995 he was Generalmusikdirektor of the Dortmund Opera.
