Archangelsky, Alexander (Andreievich)
Archangelsky, Alexander (Andreievich), Russian choral conductor and composer; b. near Penza, Oct. 23, 1846; d. Prague, Nov. 16, 1924. He studied at the St. Petersburg Court Chapel. In 1880 he organized a chorus there, with which he toured Russia (1899–1900) and Europe (1907, 1912). He was the first choral conductor in Russia to include women in performances of sacred works. In 1923 he went to Prague as conductor of a students’ choir. Among his works were choral pieces and transcriptions.
