Amadeus Quartet. Highly successful and admired Brit. str. qt. which gave its first London concert in Jan. 1948, though it had played, under various different titles, for a year before then. Its membership remained constant, viz., Norbert Brainin, Sigmund Nissel (vns.), Peter Schidlof (va.), Martin Lovett (vc.). Salzburg Fest. 1956. Britten's 3rd str. qt. (1975) comp. for them. After Schidlof's death in 1987, continued playing as Amadeus Trio. Brainin OBE 1960, his three colleagues 1973.
