Sweet Nothing ★★★ 1996 (R)

Wall Street up-and-comer Angel (Imperioli) is given some crack by a buddy (Calderon) to celebrate the birth of his child. This starts a downward spiral into addiction and dealing. At first, his wife Monika (Sorvino) goes along, but as Angel deteriorates, she learns not to trust him. Excellent performances by Imperioli and Sorvino avoid over-the-top theatrics. Script provides a realistic look at how addiction affects real people, and steers clear of obvious cliches. Based on diaries found in a Bronx apartment building. Film's producers tracked down the author and paid for his rehab. 89m/C VHS . Michael Imperioli, Mira Sorvino, Paul Calderon, Billie Neal; D: Gary Winick; W: Lee Drysdale.
