New Waterford Girl
New Waterford Girl ★★½ 1999
Mooney Pottie (Balaban) is a 15-year-old stuck in a small coal-mining community in Nova Scotia in the 1970s. Mooney has won a scholarship to a prestigious arts school and is desperate to attend but her parents refuse to let her. But careful observation has shown Mooney that girls who get themselves into “trouble” leave the community to have their babies in secret and she decides to transform herself into a slut (while keeping her virginity) and get out of town. Sweetly amusing with a compelling debut performance from Balaban. 97m/C VHS, DVD . CA Liane Balaban, Tara Spencer-Nairn, Andrew McCarthy, Nicholas (Nick) Campbell, Mary Walsh, Cathy Moriarty; D: Allan Moyle; W: Tricia Fish; C: Derek Rogers.
