New World ★½ Le Nouveau Monde 1995 (R)
Unflattering portrait of American soldiers in postwar France in the 1950s. Their presence is resented by most of the locals, who are still suffering the depredations caused by WWII unlike their American counterparts, who won't even learn a little French to get by. Young Patrick (Chatel), however, is smitten with American culture, thanks to his meeting with soldier Will (Gandolfini) and All-American girl Trudy (Silverstone). President DeGaul would eventually force the American bases to close. English and French dialogue with subtitles. 117m/C VHS, DVD . FR Nicolas Chatel, James Gandolfini, Alicia Silverstone, Sarah Grappin, Guy Marchand; D: Alain Corneau; C: William Lubtchansky.
