Danielstown is an Anglo-Irish estate located in County Cork in 1920—just four years after the Irish rebellion of 1916. Sir Richard (Gambon) and his wife, Lady Myra (Smith), have a houseful of guests, including Richard's overly romantic young niece Lois (Hawes), who's flirting with British officer, Gerald Colthurst (Tennant). But Lois has also taken to frequently visiting an old mill—where Irish guerilla fighter Peter (Lydon) is hiding out.
