The King of Hearts ★★★ Le Roi de Coeur 1966

In WWI, a Scottish soldier finds a battletorn French town evacuated of all occupants except a colorful collection of escaped lunatics from a nearby asylum. The lunatics want to make him their king, which is not a bad alternative to the insanity of war. Bujold is cute as ballerina wanna-be; look for Serrault (“La Cage aux Folles”) as, not surprisingly, a effeminate would-be hairdresser. Light-hearted comedy with a serious message; definitely worthwhile. 101m/C VHS, DVD . FR GB IT Alan Bates, Genevieve Bujold, Adolfo Celi, Francoise Christophe, Micheline Presle, Michel Serrault, Julien Guiomar, Pierre Brasseur, Jean-Claude Brialy, Pier Paolo Capponi, Jacques Balutin, Marc Dudicourt, Daniel Boulanger; D: Philippe de Broca; W: Daniel Boulanger; C: Pierre Lhomme; M: Georges Delerue.
