The Haunting ★★★½ 1963

A subtle, bloodless horror film about a weekend spent in a monstrously haunted mansion by a parapsychologist (Johnson), the mansion's skeptic heir (Tamblyn), and two mediums (Harris and Bloom). A chilling adaptation of Shirley Jackson's “The Haunting of Hill House,” in which the psychology of the heroine is forever in question. There's a silly 1999 remake that's all special effects and no scares. 113m/B VHS, DVD . GB Julie Harris, Claire Bloom, Russ Tamblyn, Richard Johnson, Fay Compton, Rosalie Crutchley, Lois Maxwell, Valentine Dyall, Diane Clare; D: Robert Wise; W: Nelson Gidding; C: Davis Boulton; M: Humphrey Searle.
