A carnal odyssey among a trio of cinephiles set against the political background of the 1968 Paris student riots. Matthew (Pitt), an impressionable American student,meets flirtatious Isabelle (Green) and her twin brother Theo (Garrel) at a protest march. He soon joins the siblings at their apartment even though he's uncomfortable at their closeness. Matthew's inhibitions dissolve as he begins a sexual relationship with Isabelle while there's increasing friction with the volatile Theo. Eventually, Matthew begins to question the insularity of the twins' privileged world. Bertolucci's a meticulous craftsman but here it's in the service of a sometimes overwrought romanticism.
