The Comfort of Strangers
The Comfort of Strangers ★★★ 1991 (R)
Atmospheric psychological thriller. Mary and Colin (Richardson and Everett), a handsome young British couple, take a Venetian holiday to rediscover the passion in their relationship. Lost in the city, they chance, it seems, upon Robert (Walken), a sort of Virgil in an Italian suit. He later reappears, and, abetted by his wife Caroline (Mirren), gradually leads the couple on an eerie tour of urbane decadence that hints at danger. Psychologically tantalizing and horrifyingly erotic, the movie's based on Ian McEwan's novel. 102m/C VHS, DVD . Christopher Walken, Natasha Richardson, Rupert Everett, Helen Mirren; D: Paul Schrader; W: Harold Pinter; C: Dante Spinotti; M: Angelo Badalamenti.
