City of Angels
City of Angels ★★½ 1998 (PG-13)
Weepy American remake of Wim Wenders' “Wings of Desire” finds guardian angel Seth (Cage) falling in love with heart surgeon Maggie (Ryan) and then trying to decide whether he wants to become mortal in order to join her. Subtle, it is not. Cage does his doeeyed best to convey Seth's longing and innocence to earthly ways, and the chemistry with Ryan really clicks. Overly sappy and sentimental, especially near the end, but that won't stop the intended audience from loving it. Big Hollywood flick that wears its arthouse aspirations on its sleeve. 117m/C VHS, DVD . Nicolas Cage, Meg Ryan, Andre Braugher, Dennis Franz, Colm Feore, Robin Bartlett, Joanna Merlin; D: Brad Silberling; W: Dana Stevens; C: John Seale; M: Gabriel Yared.
