The Bodyguard ★★ 1992 (R)

Buttoned-down, ex-Secret Service agent turned private bodyguard reluctantly takes on a wildly successful singer/actress as a client. Houston, in her acting debut as the over-indulged diva, doesn't have to stretch too far but acquits herself well. Costner has really bad hair day but easily portrays the tightly wound Frank. Critically trashed, a boxoffice smash, and too long. Originally scripted by producer Kasdan over a decade ago, with Steve McQueen in mind. Predictable romantic melodrama is kept moving by the occasional sharp dialog and a few action pieces. Songs include the smash hit “I Will Always Love You,” written and originally performed by Dolly Parton. 130m/C VHS, DVD . Kevin Costner, Whitney Houston, Gary Kemp, Bill Cobbs, Ralph Waite, Tomas Arana, Michele Lamar Richards, Mike Starr, Christopher Birt, DeVaughn Nixon, Charles Keating, Robert Wuhl; Cameos: Debbie Reynolds; D: Mick Jackson; W: Lawrence Kasdan; C: Andrew Dunn; M: Alan Silvestri. MTV Movie Awards '93: Song (“I Will Always Love You”).
