ALLIBONE, T(homas) E(dward). British, b. 1903. Genres: Physics. Career: Metropolitan Vickers Electrical Co., Manchester, England, head of High-Voltage Laboratory, 1930-46; AEI (Woolwich) Ltd., director of research laboratory at Aldermaston, 1946-63, and at Woolwich, 1948-63, scientific adviser, 1963; chief scientist for Central Electricity Generating Board, 1963- 70; University of Leeds, Leeds, England, external professor of electrical engineering, 1967-79, professor emeritus, 1979-. Chairman of governors of Reading Technical College, 1959-68; Poynton Visiting Professor of Physics at City University, 1971-, and Robert Kitchin (Saddlers) Research Professor; lecturer; chairman of the convocation at University of Sheffield. Member of British team seconded to University of California, Berkeley, and Oak Ridge, Tenn., to work on the development of the atomic bomb, 1944-45; visitor at British Iron and Steel Research Association, 1949-55, and Aslib, 1955-62; member of scientific and governmental committees. Publications: The Release and Use of Nuclear Energy, 1961; Rutherford: Father of Nuclear Energy, 1972; The Royal Society and Its Dining Clubs, 1975; Lightning: The Long Spark, 1977; (with G. Hartcup) Cockcroft and the Atom, 1983; Cambridge Physics in the Thirties, 1984; The Making of Physicists, 1987; numerous biographical memoirs. Died 2003.
