Three weeks before the Winter Olympics in Lillehammer in 1994, major contender Ulrike Maier of Austria was killed during a downhill race in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. She had won two World championships, one in 1989 while pregnant and one in 1991, and had been fifth overall in the 1992–93 World Cup.
