Holland, Dulcie Sybil (1913—)

Australian composer, cellist, pianist, and radio broadcaster who received many awards for her compositions. Born in Sydney, Australia, on January 5, 1913; studied at the Royal College of Music in London; studied composition with Alfred Hill, piano with Frank Hutchens, and cello under Gladstone Bell at the Sydney Conservatorium; studied privately with Roy Agnew.

Like many Australians in the music world, Dulcie Holland attended music schools down under before studying further at the Royal College of Music in London. At the Sydney Conservatorium, she studied composition with Alfred Hill, piano with Frank Hutchens, and cello under Gladstone Bell. She also studied privately with Roy Agnew. At the Royal College of Music, where she studied with John Ireland, she won the Blumenthal Scholarship and the Cobbett Prize for chamber composition in 1938. Once she returned to her native country, Holland became an examiner for the Australian music examination board. She also appeared as a concert pianist. In 1965, she won the Warringah and Henry Lawson Festival award. Dulcie Holland received many composition awards from the Australian Broadcasting Company as well as giving many broadcasts on the ABC network. Throughout her career, she composed extensively, writing over a hundred works for orchestra, chamber orchestra, piano, and vocal groups.
