African-American runner. Name variations: Barbara Ann Ferrell Edmondson. Born on July 8, 1947, in Hattiesburg, Mississippi; attended Harrison Technical High School in Chicago and Los Angeles City College; received a B.A. in sociology at California State, Los Angeles, 1969; coached by Fred Jones; married Warren Edmondson; children: Malika and Maya.
Barbara Ferrell set the world record in the 100 meters in 1968. That same year, she won the silver medal in the 100 meters and the gold medal in the 4×100 meter relay in the Mexico City Olympics.
