Ethelburga (d. 676?)

Saxon saint and abbess of Barking. Name variations: Aethelburh; Ethelburh; Ethelberga. Died around 676; sister of Saint Erkonwald.

When Saint Erkonwald founded the monastery of Chertsey for himself, he founded a convent at Barking, Essex, for his sister Ethelburga; he then sent to France for Hildeletha and committed his sister to her care. When Ethelburga died as abbess of Barking, Hildeletha succeeded her. Ethelburga is commemorated on Oct. 11.
