Ethelswyth (c. 843–889)

Queen of Mercia. Name variations: Aethelswyth or Æthelswyth. Born around 843; died in Paris while on a journey to Rome in 889; buried at Pavia or Ticino, Italy; daughter of Ethelwulf, king of the English, and Osburga (?–c. 855); sister of Alfred the Great, king of the English (r. 871–899); married Burghred, king of Mercia, after April 2, 853.

Ethelswyth became a nun on widowhood; she died on pilgrimage to Rome and is buried at either Pavia or Ticino.
