Curry, Denise (1959—)

American basketball player who, in the mid-1980s, held the record for the most points in a single game. Born in Davis, California, on August 22, 1959; attended University of California at Los Angeles.

Although some were quicker, stronger, or jumped higher than Denise Curry, she was known as a universal player, effective in any position, who outshone her fellow athletes overall. No player who came before her in UCLA basketball history, male or female, had more points than Curry. She qualified for the 1980 Olympic team, but the United States boycotted the games when the former Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan. Curry joined the U.S. national team playing on its East European tour in 1982; the team upset the Soviet Union 85–83 that year. As opportunities for women to play basketball once they left college were extremely limited, Curry played for a West German club in 1983. The following year, she finally made it to the Los Angeles Olympics, and her basketball team won the gold. During her career, Curry scored 3,198 points. In the mid-1980s, she held the record for the most points in a single game at 47.
