Brazilian novelist and poet. Name variations: (pseudonym) Uma Brasileira. Born 1825 in São Luís, Brazil; died 1917; never married but adopted several children.
Worked as teacher in Guimarães, Maranhão; wrote Úrsula (1959), the 2nd novel by a woman and 1st abolitionist novel in Brazil; also wrote Maria Firmina, fragmentos de uma vida (1975); contributed to Semanário Maranhense, wrote hymns and abolitionist songs in Cantos à beira-mar (1871), and contributed 2 stories to Moraes Filho (1975).
