Was the 1st woman elected mayor in Kentville (1946), and the 1st woman in the Maritimes to hold a mayoral position; remained mayor until 1960; as a Progressive Conservative, was the 1st woman elected to the Nova Scotia Legislative Assembly (1960); was still a sitting member of the legislature at time of death. Named a Member of the Order of the British Empire (1946).
