Member of the CDA (Christian Democrats) Parliamentary Party Executive (1981–89); as a member of the European People's Party (Christian Democrats) and European Democrats (EPP), elected to 4th and 5th European Parliament (1994–99, 1999–2004); named vice-chair for relations with South Africa. Awarded Knight of the Order of the Netherlands Lion (1994).
