Nogami, Yaeko (1885–1985)

Japanese novelist, playwright and essayist. Born May 6, 1885, in Usuki, Oita prefecture, Japan; died Mar30, 1985; m. Toyoichiro Nogami (translator and English literature scholar).

One of the most famous of modern woman novelists in Japan, had extensive knowledge of English and Japanese literature; was made member of Japan Academy of Arts (1948) and received Cultural Medal (1971); works include The Neptune (1922), Machiko (1928), A Maze (1958), Hideyoshi and Rikyu (1963), from which the film Rikyu was based (2000), and The Complete Works of Yaeko Nogami (26 vols); also wrote essays, translations, and plays.
