African-American memoirist. Born Sept 15, 1940, in Wilkinson Co., Mississippi; dau. of Fred and Elnire (Williams) Moody; attended Natchez Junior College; Tougaloo College, BS, 1964; m. Austin Stratus (div. 1969); children: Sascha.
A civil-rights activist, worked for CORE in 1960s and took part in Freedom Summer; was civil rights project coordinator at Cornell University (1964–65); published autobiography, Coming of Age in Mississippi (1968), to great acclaim; also wrote Mr. Death: Four Stories (1975).
