African-American novelist, folklorist and short-story writer. Name variations: Arthenia Bates Millican; Arthenia Millican. Born Arthenia Jackson, June 1, 1920, in Sumter, SC; sister of Calvin Shepard Jackson and Susan Emma (David) Jackson.
Wrote PhD dissertation on James Wheldon Johnson (1972) and taught at Southern University in Baton Rouge; works include Seeds Beneath the Snow (1969) and The Deity Nodded (1973).
