Mann, Shelley (1937–)
American swimmer. Born Oct 15, 1937, in Arlington, VA.
Crippled by polio (1943); won U.S. national championship (1951); was the 1st woman to win a gold medal in the inaugural 100-meter butterfly at Melbourne Olympics (1956), and also went home with a silver medal in the 4×100-meter freestyle relay; held records in backstroke, freestyle, individual medley, and butterfly. Inducted into Swimming and Diving Hall of Fame (1966).
