Mackintosh, Margaret (1865–1933)

English-born artist . Name variations: Margaret MacDonald. Born Margaret MacDonald in Staffordshire, England, in 1865; died in 1933; sister of Frances MacDonald (1874–1921); studied at the Glasgow College of Art; married Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1868–1928, a Scottish architect, designer and water-colorist), in 1900.

Known for her watercolors, stained glass, and book illustration, Margaret Mackintosh worked closely with her sister Frances MacDonald from 1894 until Margaret's marriage to Charles Rennie Mackintosh in 1900. From then on, Margaret collaborated with her husband, an influential architect, designer, watercolorist, and exponent of Art Nouveau, on much of his work, especially in textile design. Margaret Mackintosh exhibited widely on the Continent and won the Diploma of Honor at the Turin International Exhibition in 1902. Following the Mackintoshes' move to London from Glasgow, Margaret's work as a painter supported them, as Charles' career tapered off in his later years.
