Howes, Edith Annie (1872–1954)

New Zealand children's writer. Born Aug 29, 1872, in London, England; died July 9, 1954, in Dunedin, New Zealand; dau. of Cecilia Brown Howes and William Howes (post office clerk); never married.

Moved to New Zealand as child; became teacher and writer; wrote books to help in development of Montessori teaching methods; wrote Tales Out of School (1919), in which she criticized the state of New Zealand schools; also wrote about 30 books for children, including The Cradle Ship (1916) and the oft-reprinted Fairy Rings (1911). Received MBE (1935) and George VI Coronation Medal (1937).
