Published 1st novel The Enclosure (1961); became book review editor at Evening Telegraph; other novels include I'm the King of the Castle (1970), In the Springtime of the Year (1974) and The Woman in Black (1983); short-story collections include The Albatross (1971) and The Custodian (1972); nonfiction includes The Magic Apple Tree: A Country Year (1982), Lanterns Across the Snow (1987) and The Lighting of the Lamps (1987).
