Norwegian social researcher and peace broker. Born Dec 7, 1945; died Dec 26, 2004; attended Harvard University and London School of Economics; graduate of University of Oslo, 1971; m. Johan Jorgen Holst (Norwegian foreign minister, died 1994); children: 2 sons.
Commissioned to survey Palestinian living conditions in Gaza and West Bank for Norwegian Trade Union Centre for Social Science and Research (FAFO), formed close relations with PLO and Rabin's Labour Party; helped instigate the secret talks that led to the Oslo Accords (1993); was senior researcher at Norwegian Institute of International Affairs (1983–2004).
