Hall, Emma Amelia (1837–1884)

American prison reformer and administrator. Born Feb 28, 1837, in Raisin Township, Lenawee County, Michigan; died Dec 27, 1884, in Albuquerque, New Mexico; dau. of Reuben Lord Hall (farmer and schoolteacher) and Abby Wells (Lee) Hall.

Hired as teacher at House of Shelter, women's workshop and rehabilitation facility in Detroit, MI, by prison reformer Zebulon Reed Brockway, and served as matron (1871–74); worked as matron at 2 other state institutions; established a new, experimental reform school for girls in Adrian, Michigan, and served as its 1st superintendent (1881–84); became missionary teacher to Native Americans in New Mexico (1884).
