Made London stage debut in The Voysey Inheritance (1912); had a long and prosperous English stage and tv career; during war and postwar years, appeared on NY stage and in several films (1941–51), including Commandos Strike at Dawn, Mission to Moscow, Jane Eyre, Phantom of the Opera, El Cid, The Damned, The Uninvited, Valley of Decision, Wanted for Murder and Frieda.
