Dinah (fl. 1730 bce)

Biblical woman. Flourished around 1730 bce; daughter of Jacob and Leah; sister of Simeon and Levi (Genesis 30:21).

In the Old Testament, Dinah was the only daughter of Jacob, father of the 12 patriarchs and ancestor of the Israelites, and his first wife Leah . The seduction of Dinah by Shechem, son of Hivite chief Hamor, led Dinah's brothers Simeon and Levi to take revenge by putting the Shechemites to death (Genesis 34). Jacob often spoke of the tragedy of his only daughter with abhorrence and regret. Dinah in Hebrew means judged or avenged.
