Denton, Mary Florence (1857–1947)

American missionary in Japan. Born Mary Florence Denton, July 4, 1857, in Nevada Co., California; died Dec 24, 1947, in Kyoto, Japan; dau. of Edward Michael Denton and Mary Mehitable (Strobridge) Denton; attended Poston Collegiate School in Oakland, California.

Began association with Doshisha schools in Kyoto, Japan (1888), which continued the rest of her life; largely known for teaching English, the Bible, and Western cooking; served on National Committee of YWCA of Japan; from Japanese government, received sixth class (1933) and third class Order of the Sacred Treasure.
