Chevalier, Caroline (c. 1832–1917)

New Zealand travel writer. Name variations: Caroline Wilkie. Born Caroline Wilkie, c. 1832–1836, in London, England; died 1917; dau. of Frederick Wilkie (artist) and Sarah (Drew) Wilkie; m. Nicholas Chevalier (artist), 1857.

Immigrated to New Zealand to join husband (1866); accompanied husband on difficult journey to west coast (April 1866); believed to have been the 1st European woman to travel there; recorded event in monograph, Reminiscences of a journey across the South Island in 1866.
