Northern Ireland politician. Name variations: Irene Calvert. Born Lilian Irene Mercer Earls, Feb 10, 1909, in Belfast, Northern Ireland; died May 19, 2000; dau. of Mary Arnold and John Earls (professor of mathematics at Queen's University); m. Raymond Calvert.
As wartime chief welfare officer, handled the resettlement of evacuated Gibraltarians (1940) and the care of those affected by the bombing of Belfast (1941); an Independent for Queen's University, Belfast, elected to the Northern Ireland House of Commons in a by-election (1945); introduced reforms to education and child welfare laws; resigned over partition (1953).
