Member of Provincial States (Provinciale Staten) of Zeeland (1978–90); as a member of the European Liberal, Democrat and Reform Party, elected to 4th and 5th European Parliament (1994–99, 1999–2004); served as vice-chair of European Economic Area Joint Parliamentary Committee (1994–99); named vice-chair of Committee on Citizens' Freedoms and Rights, Justice and Home Affairs (2003). Named Knight of the Order or Orange Nassau (1999).
