Barton, Pam (1917–1943)

English golfer. Born Pamela Barton in London, England, on March 4, 1917; died in a plane crash in England on November 14, 1943.

Twice runner-up for the British Women's Championship (1934, 1935), Pam Barton finally took the top spot in 1936, and again in 1939. In October 1936, she became "the Girl Wonder of British Golf" when she also won the USGA Women's Championship, defeating Maureen Orcutt (Mrs. J.D. Crews) in the final round at the Canoe Brook Country Club in New Jersey. Following in the footsteps of Dorothy Campbell Hurd , an American who held both titles in 1909, Barton was the first English woman to hold English and American titles in the same year. During World War II, Pam Barton enlisted in the Women's Auxiliary Air Force and was killed in a plane crash while on duty.
