Irish novelist, playwright and poet. Born Leland Hone, 1928, in India, of Irish parents; brought to Ireland at age 2, grew up in Leixlip, Co. Kildare; attended Alexandra College, Dublin, and London University; m. Michael Bardwell (sep.); children: 6.
Poetry includes The Mad Cyclist (1970), Dostoevsky's Grave: New and Selected Poems (1991), and The White Beach: New and Selected Poems 1960–1998 (1998); novels include Girl on a Bicycle (1978), That London Winter (1981), The House (1984), There We Have Been (1989) and Mother to a Stranger (2002); also published short stories and stage and radio plays.
